Sling2k Workshop Cognitive Linguistics*

چکیده
A curious thing happened to me recently. I was revisited by a graduate student from the linguistics department who had taken my course in cognitive linguistics six years ago. The son of a famous German linguist, with all the benefits of both European and American educations, this young man was unusually erudite and a pleasure in class because of the comparisons he could draw among linguistic traditions. Still, it was evident that he was politely sitting through the course in order to chock up a required elective; he clearly felt no affinity toward the subject matter. Suddenly he reappeared last week, tremendously animated, speaking so fast I could barely follow him. His dissertation, an analysis of resultative constructions, had run into a series of dead-ends, eventually exhausting all the syntactic theories available, and, despite himself, everywhere he looked he was seeing semantic prototypes and their effects. Then came the confession:

Proceedings of the EACL 2009 Workshop on GEMS : GEometrical Models of Natural Language Semantics Endorsed by the Association for Computational Linguistics
We propose an approach to corpus-based semantics, inspired by cognitive science, in which different semantic tasks are tackled using the same underlying repository of distributional information, collected once and for all from the source corpus. Task-specific semantic spaces are then built on demand from the repository. A straightforward implementation of our proposal achieves state-of-the-art ...
متن کاملTaking the Best of Both Worlds: Why Lakoff and Chomsky can both benefit Information Systems
I have spent the last few years of my life presenting papers on the ways in which cognitive science in general and linguistics in particular can inform research in Information Systems (IS). The works originate firmly in the “Chomskian”1 tradition of linguistics, contrary to the general theme of the workshop. But do we really need to take sides in the generative vs. cognitive linguistics debate?...
متن کاملWorkshop Proposal: PRE-CogSci 2013: Bridging the gap between cognitive and computational approaches to reference
This full-day workshop explores the Production of Referring Expressions (PRE) from different perspectives. It follows two earlier workshops on the same theme, which were associated with two earlier CogSci conferences. The first of these, PRE-CogSci 2009, focussed on the interplay between computational and empirical methods.1 The second, PRECogSci 2011, broadened this theme to include work on di...
متن کاملLeveraging Researcher Multivocality for Insights on Collaborative Learning Workshop # 8 White Paper
This workshop targets researchers in the Learning Sciences, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) communities who are interested in how human interaction leads to learning. Such researchers come from many different disciplines (psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, didactics, etc.) and thus employ diverse methods in pursu...
متن کاملDistributional Semantics beyond Concrete Concepts
In the last decade, corpus-based distributional models of semantic similarity and association have slipped into the mainstream of cognitive science and computational linguistics. On the basis of the contexts in which a word is used, they claim to capture certain aspects of word meaning and human semantic space organization. In computational linguistics, these models have been used to automatica...
